Bing, by no means did I say he should do it. I hope he doesn't! That trailer would only weight slightly less than the car. Can we say tail wagging the dog?

No way should you tow that much weight. The last Cavalier I had expressly stated NOT to tow with the car, the only way they recommend towing at all is with the 2.4 litre DOHC engine and the automatic, and that is only 1000 lbs. The tranny and brakes are pretty thinskinned on the Cavalier, not designed for that kind of work. Then again, I have a nutcase I work with that regularly tows way too much weight behind his 93. I only hope he doesn't take anyone with him when his number comes up...

If your vehicle can't stop the trailer all by itself, ya got no business towing it. The trailer brakes are there as a safety/ease of towing feature to assist your vehicle. My trailer has brakes, and they work nicely. if they don't, I know my truck will stop the trailer, too. Even in the mountains.
