how heavy

Check your door pillar and owner's manual.
You should not exceed your GVWR, GCWR, front and rear GAWR. Or the manufacturers listed tow rating (you will have to exceed the others before you touch this.)
If you have everything, take a trip down to a local public scale and weigh everything. Search around here for instructions or search on google. rv.net has a great forum over there (much like this one) and instructions are there. I've posted it too many times to repeat myself.

Hey bud, I've got an 03 Ram 1500, quad cab, 2x4, 5.7L, regular hitch. Like the other post say's check your door, and owners manual. But I tow a pretty heavy trailer with 4 heavy atv's with no problem. Just make sure you turn off your overdrive while towing and keep your RPM's below 3000, it won't hurt it to go over 3000 rpm's, but i wouldn't want to do it for long periods of time. I assume your truck already has a transmition cooler. You also might want to switch to a synthetic trans fluid. B&M makes some real good fluid and will help keep the temp down.

Wood, there are several public scales around town. Look in the phone book for them. Not sure if anyone is in Clovis per se. Cheapest I found was like downtown Fresno at some place. Can't remember.

If you keep the speed under 67 or 68 mph with overdrive turned off you shouldn't go over 3000 rpm, especially towing with a 2500 series, and there really isn't an uphill climb that is so long that it will hurt to have your rpm's over 3000 going up them. When I say for "too long" i mean like over an hour or so. And even then your probably not going to do any type of bad damage, other than a little more engine wear than would normally occur.

dpends on what gears you have, as long as the trans is not hunting around leave it in o.d., remember its not just the weight, also include the frontal area of your vehicle and your load this will also effect your trucks performance. Ford used to have recomendations as far as frontal area, load and truck specs, I would think that dodge also did.
