Axle placement on a home built trailer... Who has an idea?
I have a boat trailer that is rated for 2200lbs, or 18' boat. I just pulled the rollers off. I want to move the axle forward, but I dont know the correct placement for it for weight distribution. I don't want to much tongue weight fully loaded. Nor do I want tail weight on the trailer. Is their a way to figure this out? Thanks guys.

I personaly dont have any clue but a good freind builds custome trailers at home after hours and his always come out perfectly ballanced so he obviosly knows how to do it. I bought my ATV trailer from him and it is perfect. With 2 machines on it I can still pick up the toung and move it around buy hand. If I had to guess there is probobly around 60-80 pounds of toung wheight with 2 utility machines on it. I will ask him monday at work how to figure it out and let ya know.

You want your tongue weight to be 10% to 15% of the total weight of the trailer and it's load - try to err closer to the 15% figure. Too little tongue weight will cause you to fishtail at speed. Too much tongue weight is only a factor if you are nearing the limits of your tow vehicle.

Jaybee is right on the tongue percentage. Will the quads be evenly loaded? The axles are set way in the back on a boat trailer because boats are very rear weight biased. I would assume normally you would want the trailer axle about 55-60% from front to back of the load carrying area.
