Is there an easy way to raise the deck of this trailer (PJ trailer)? With the springs located underneath the axle can't I relocate em on top of the axle for a few extra inches. I don't want to invest a whole lot of money in this, of course. But that shouldn't affect the ride of the trailer any, would it?

 

yes you can I have heard of guys doing that with the enclosed car haulers to get them a bit higher.

 

i got some flat steal and made longer shackles for mine got about 2 inches.
just drilled holes in them about a inchfarther than the old ones .
cost me about10 bucks

 

You will probably have to look at getting different mounting bolts, but this is something that truck guys have been doing for years to gain a little lift. Hard ot tell from here without a photo to look at. As for pulling weird, that is going to depend on how far you raise it, and how much the hitch angle changes. You may need to adjust the ball hight to get it right. Otherwise you may get some sway. Also, remember you are changing the center of gravity some, so take it wasy until you know what the trailer is going to do with weight in it.

 

Welding some tube stock between the frame and shackles is a pretty common way to do it. Be sure the eyes of the shackles end up in the same positions, except lower, to maintain proper alignment. Don't go too high, or it won't be stable and it will have that baby buggy look.

Why do you need it higher? You won't gain any ground clearance if you keep the same axle? If the advar is your truck, you might need a custom ball mount to be able to tow it level.

 

Tired of leaving steep driveways and off-highway roads with little hills and my license plate getting bent. And thats relatively tame angles. I had a local welder fab me up one hell of a drop down hitch years ago after lifting the truck. The top of the ball is right at 18".

 

Welding in a little tubing or subframe may be the way to go, then.

 

If your axles are over your spring perches you may want to reposition them to under. They make kits that will allow you to raise your trailer by doing this.

Whatever you do, DO NOT flip the axles to put the spring perches in another location. I have seen people do this and unless you have perfectly straight axles this is not good. Our toy hauler has axles that have a camber to them and if you turn them over you will actually set yourseld up for a mess.
