China made Roketa Utility ATV Review
I recently purchased a Roketa utility ATV which is made in China, after riding this machine for several months I'm posting my opinion of this machine in an effort to help anyone else interested in buying a China made ATV. What do I know about ATV's? Nothing, but I do know a little something about dirt bikes, I raced hare scrambles and enduros throughout New England for several years.
The machine I have is the Discovery 300 Utility ATV with a CVT automatic transmission with reverse, 2 wheel drive, shaft drive and water cooled. Drum brakes in the front and disc brake in the rear, gross weight is 600 lbs. I bought this ATV from Viva Motorsports in Vernon Calif. total cost with shipping $2,450.00. The ATV was packaged in a metal crate and arrived at my door by tractor trailer, assembly required installing the front wheels, attaching the handlebars and headlight, the rear brake caliper and rear shock. All the fluids and oils are installed however, I replaced them with American made quality oil and coolant. Two issues during assembly, the crate was missing the handlebar clamps and bolts and the battery was missing. I called the company and they express UPS these missing items to me. I was impressed with the parts availability and the speed they got them to me.
They call this ATV a 300 but it is actually 260cc, one would think it would be under powered for the weight of the machine but I found it has plenty of power for average trail riding and working around the yard. They claim it has a top speed of 80MPH however the fastest I've gone is 50, at high speed stability seems to be an issue which I believe is caused by the tires which are made in China. If you want a machine for riding in deep mud bogs or steep mountain trails then I would say this ATV is under powered. I'm located in North Florida where the trails are sandy and wet with deep ditches to cross, this ATV handles it extremely well. The automatic transmission has a forward and reverse position, no hand clutch simply place the shift lever in forward position and go. Acceleration is smooth throughout the throttle range in fact No matter what the trail situation I've been in the transmission never searches for a gear even with two adults on board. However the transmission does fade in stress situations such as getting stuck in deep sand and continually rocking back and forth to get out. But once it cools it comes back strong. Its really misleading to say the transmission fades what really is fading is the drive belt. This engine uses a drive belt, (it looks like a automotive timing belt) it runs from the engine crank to the transmission. I've posted photos the link is given below. There is nothing special about the suspension all I can say is it works very well. With dual shocks in the front and a mono shock in the rear the suspension handles roots, logs, ruts, fire roads and tight trails adequately. Off camber trails or blasting sharp corners the suspension is stiff enough so there is no uneasy roll that will give you the sensation of rolling over yet it is soft enough to provide a smooth ride over rough terrain. The stock muffler is extremely quiet, during trail rides I've been able to come up close to wild life before spooking them. Pro's and Con's in my opinion:
Pro's
Engine starts fast and easy even on cold mornings.
Muffler and the engine are quiet.
Overall suspension works well right out of the box.
Dual radiator cooling fans keep the engine running cool and radiator is well protected.
Shaft drive smooth and quiet.
Engine power is smooth keeping less experience riders out of trouble.
Frame is equipped with a trailer hitch.
More than half the price of the Japanese models.
Viva Motor Sports carries the largest parts inventory in the USA.
Con's
No grease fittings in any of the suspension joints.
Engine is not equipped with an oil filter.
The tires make the machine wander on fast open trails.
Transmission fades under stress conditions.
Overall machine weight is a little hefty.
Nasty trail environments will need more power.
Aftermarket parts limited.
My overall opinion, on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being best I would rate this ATV an 8. I like it, in fact I just placed an order for another one for my wife. We no have two ATV's for less than the cost of one brand name model. If you want to check out the photo of the transmission goto: http://dept.150m.com/atv.html

We have a local Yamoto Dealer here and he sells a lot, but most of the models are the 2 wheel drive 150 - 200 cc kids sport models, and they hold up great considering the low price and the dealer backs up and repairs any problems right away. Im going to get hammered for saying this but most of all the atv engines are made in China anyhow.

I don't know about where you live but around these parts the cheapest kawasaki bayou is $4799.00. Add dealer prep and sales tax you are over 5 grand. No sales tax or dealer prep on the Roketa. As fas as trying to sell my Roketa, I don't plan on selling it. I'm going to have fun and beat it into the ground and when I can't fix it anymore I'll toss it and buy another.

Those cheap prices are only available in Northern states where the snow is deep and the liberals close trails daily, down here where you ride all year and trails are plentiful you're not getting one that cheap... I looked at one here at the local Kawasaki dealer the 2006 $4799 and it looks like it belongs in the pee wee class. In fact, I hate to say it but the Roketa Discovery 300 is built tougher.
