Or muzzle loader or revolver. Why the hell would you need a rifle to kill anything in this state?
Ummm - - - - Pointy sticks, shotguns and the rest are not all that effective in most of Eastern Washington. Lots of deer, including Blacktails, are taken at ranges well in excess of 200 yards.
Just cuz they are don't mean you have to.. If your a good hunter you should be able to get within 60yards of anything but maybe antelope. them sons of biatches is sketchy as can be.
Obviously you have not spent a great deal of time hunting the open hills along the Columbia or the wheat fields of the area. A close shot is in the 100 yard range. There are some areas that a bow or shotgun would be effective but in the open you are going to do a lot of walking to get from one brush area to the next. And when you get there every animal in the area knows where you are and just moves out ahead of you. Lots of good hunters in Eastern Washington regardless of what you may think.

Glad to hear about Jenna coming home.

The friend i was talking about yesterday left the hospital about an hour ago. He has 3 compressed discs in lower back, fractured shoulder bone, broken heal and a chewed up tongue. lol He drives a truck for a living. I can't remember the name of it, it's at the tip of my tongue. It's the kind of truck that sucks leaves, etc out of drains. So he will be out for awhile. His new nickname is Flipper!

Muzzle loader would be kewl. but really unless yoru an old fart like bear.. there is no excuse for hunting westerd washington with a rifle.

Hey, that's uncalled for. I hunt with a pistol sometimes and always carry one (the most dangerous game is not in the woods) and have even taken a deer with one. The only problem is the older I get the more the damn gun jumps around on it's own. Is that what shooting sticks are for?

Nearly all of the "Muzzle Loaders" you see used for hunting today are rifles. The modern muzzle loader is a far cry from the originals that were used until the mid 1800's. Matter of fact most of the modern coal burners are capable of longer range and accuracy than the Sharps 50-70 breach loader, Model 1852, I often use as a brush gun.

The one original muzzle loader I still shoot on occasion is a Remington model 1856 with Maynerd tape primer system. 58 Calibre and likes 65 grains of FFFG. Best group ever was 16" at 50 yards. Not really good enough for hunting to my way of thinking.
Boy that cant even compete with a bow.. How the hell did they kill so many indians.
Mass firepower. That particular smooth bore was issued to Federal troops during the Civil War. Way better weapons were available but these were cheap to make and easy to use. In one on one fights with any adversary the person with the bow would probably win. Even when using "buck and ball" loads the chances of hitting a man size target at 60 or 70 yards was not good.

I am starting to wonder myself, last weekend I thought I heard somthin' I handed my rifle to wild and went into the thickets with my 45 i figured i could only see 10 ft infront of me so it would get the job done. I am just used to colorado. Everything I know about hunting is useless here.
I grew up here and when in the military, I hunted the mid-west and couldn't figure out why we were never within shooting range (100 yards max like here). The NW coast is a different world when it comes to huntin'. The deer are small so they can move thru the brush and can they move thru it! Really, a pistol is all you need, even a lowly 357 Mag will get the job done if you can shoot a pistol, a lot of people can't as you need to be able to reach out to 50 yards with it. I do prefer my 41 Mag however. Washington requires only a 4" barrel now and a center fire cartridge, so your 45 is legal and they will drop a deer.

Only lazy people hunt Eastern Washington. It's to open and the game has nowhere to hide. Not like the western side of the mountains. Any shootin' at animals past 100 yards isn't huntin' anymore, it's sniping and unfair to the animal.
