I was wondering if anyone has ever ridden around the UP- I see that there are trails on Michigan's DNR website but their maps leave something to be desired. I am especially interested in the Watersmeet area, the Iron River area and the Ironwood area.
Thanks!!

Hi Mudpuppy, welcome to Michigan. The U.P. is a good way to start riding Michigan, however, I agree with you. The maps from DNR in this area sucks... I sugjest you go back on line and contact each county you intend to ride. They can give you up to date, information such as trail conditions, motels/hotels, points of interest. I have not riden that side of the U.P. yet but friends tell me I'm missing the best part of the State.

Matt, I can tell you only about the DNR Forest Island Trail south of Escanaba, Mi. The trail makes a figure 8 and takes about 5 hours to do and is very well mark and has trail marker posts at every intersection with a map indicating where you are. The other is the Norway Trail. This trail is continuing upgrades each year. Of course these trails are east of where you wnat to ride. The DNR Trails near Iron River and toward watersmeet are rail road grades. Check out the chanber of commerce sites in the those areas you want,
I will be riding the Dunbar area on the 8th of May and the Hurley Rally on Memorial weekend. Mainly in Iron County Wis. Trails north of Saxon and Iron Belt and Upson Lake.

The old railway grade , just out of St Ignace is a great place to ride(just across the Mackinaw Bridge), plus there are some sweet side trails, mud and sand Plenty of fair priced hotels this time of the year and you have Clydes to eat juciy burgers
