Yeah, Katstoy, it can get crazy at Ocotillo Wells. We always camp down the road farther off of Pole Line Road (where the telephone poles are). Last time there was one drunk crazy guy flying through everyone's campsite on a 2-stroke at 3:00 a.m. shouting "Yaaaahooooo!", but that was the only idiot we had to deal with. I'm all for people having fun, but there's a whole big desert out there . . . how about doing that sort of thing there, away from campsite areas where some of us non-tweakers are trying to get some sleep.
I don't remember having so many whoops in the area we go to. There's some, but not anything excessive, although I do remember there being a lot of them on the way to the mud pots.

Bud, you're thinking too small. Ever hear of a tiger pit? Large pits dug then camoflauged along suspected tiger paths in India. I don't see why wouldn't this be equally as effective if not more so against drunken idiots (or tweakers).
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

I was told by someone else here on the site that there is also a sand hill east of the dry lake bed a couple of miles, I didn't know about it before but I intend to find it this weekend. So the short answer is, .....***** not paddles.
You will find the sand dunes a couple of mile east of soggy dry lake. Some BIG hillclimbs in the sand can be found too. Go north from the dunes, and go east around the rocky hills. You will see some big sand trails in between the rocks. See if you make it....I did! Paddles would be great for this one hill. But knobbies would be the choice for this terrain.

On the subject of 29 Palms and military property:
The reason you should not go deep into military training ranges is for just the reason is that they are just that - training ranges
If a tank shoots a rocket round, or an aircraft starts a gun run, they are not expecting someone on an off road vehicle to be in the impact area. These training evolutions are on-going and un announced to the public.
Stay out of there, you don't know its coming until you see the impact! There is also, often times, unexploded ordnance in areas used for live fire. Not a place to be driving in.

Ah, point well made about a pit being a lot of work and all. As a former active duty Marine though it just goes against the very fiber of my being to shoot and intentionally miss.
Well, since I don't have ready access to claymores, perhaps something a little more low impact like aircraft cable stretched across the path. Now I sound cruel but I just have a very low tolerance for rude and/or dangerous behavior. I would never really booby trap a path, even though it may be deserved.
I'm new to quads, and my first time out (Stoddard Wells) I had a 14 year old boy die under my hands (giving cpr) after an accident with a drunk driver. I don't think I could deal with that being one of my boys. So offroaders that have been drinking/using or just a little too full of youth and empty of thought are likely to earn a little face time with me if they can't find the courtesy to show a little ettiquete around the camps.
OK, enough about that.
MSGT has a valid point about the training ranges. I remember both at 29 palms and camp pendleton times when ranges had to be shut down due to "unauthorized traffic" down range. I don't recall anyone ever getting hurt, but I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of all that fire power.
