CALIFORNIA Quad Riders report here.....

We went to Pismo for Thanksgiving and had a great time. Looks like we will be going back on Sat. sometime after Santa's presents are opened and then returning Wed. night, Dec. 29. Anyone else headed that way?

Went for a spur-of-the-moment ride at Wildomar yesterday (near Lake Elsinore, off Ortega Hwy.) I haven't been there in a few years and we won't be going back. The place is crawling with Rangers, and they harass you the moment you arrive about everything on your bike/quad. They literally come over to where you're parked and go over your ATV's with a fine tooth comb. They almost didn't let us ride because all of our quads/bike were "too loud". Oh please! No one has EVER said anything to us anywhere else. They harassed everyone there about the same thing. "Everyone's" bike was too loud. You can only ride there basically if you have a completely stock exhaust and that's it. I don't care for the terrain there either - every trail was riddled with massive ruts, and the trails are so narrow that you can't see anyone who might be coming at you. I hated it. Never going back there.

Ridin, unfortunately, most aftermarket pipes ARE too loud. Stock pipes should meet the 96dB sound limit. Were they actually checking with a sound meter? They have to use a sound meter to ticket you, and they MUST use the proper procedure for testing. Granted the Ranger may have enough experience to go by ear, but that's not going to stand up in court.
The Forest Service seems to be more concerned with spark arrestors, though sound in specific areas may be on the agenda for the agency, or for a specific Ranger with a grudge. The state is on the move with sound as that's what has caused the state to be in the Defendant section of a lawsuit (with probably more on the horizon [my guess is Oceano Dunes is next].

(1) Noise emissions of competition off-highway vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 1998, shall be limited to not more than 96 dbA, and if manufactured prior to January 1, 1998, to not more than 101 dbA, when measured from a distance of 20 inches using test procedures established by the Society of Automotive Engineers under Standard J-1287, as applicable. Noise emissions of all other off-highway vehicles shall be limited to not more than 96 dbA if manufactured on or after January 1, 1986, and not more than 101 dbA if manufactured prior to January 1, 1986, when measured from a distance of 20 inches using test procedures established by the Society of Automotive Engineers under Standard J-1287, as applicable.
So, they can use their experience, to say that it is reasonable to believe your exhaust is loud and conduct a dbA reading test, based on that.
