What's going on in Lewis Co. NY?

I was a bit dismayed last Saturday when I drove up to Barnes Corners, and it was like I was in a ghost town. I typically park in the Barnes Corners Hotel parking lot, and then drive to the trails. Apparently the county legislators decided in their infinite wisdom to shut down the roads. A few of the businesses I stopped at did not seem happy as we ATVers bring in the $ when we ride.

I think all N.Y. atv riders should not register their atv next year. They raised registration then close down trails. I think the legislators closed down trails and county roads because they were voted out so this was a way to screw the county .I wouldnt worry about it its just politics.I think there was a hearing 5/2/06.Try calling tug hill camp ground and ask whats going on.Not all the legislators voted to close down 7 out of the 10 did.Let me know if you hear anything.

I agree! I am a bit miffed about that b/c you are right......costs to register go up yet they give us no place to ride - Total BS! If I do hear anything I will definitely post. You can ride (with a paid membership) on the Oswego Co. trails in Altmar. This club has been working extremely hard on all fronts (with land owners, legislators, businesses), and with their leadership I am optamistic that we could eventually have an extensive multicounty connected trail system. If this possibility did become a reality I think that it could do a lot for business and the sport for this area.

Last I had heard, 1)the current county legislature up there is working to get the roads and thus trails opened back up. 2) The state has yet to give final word on if it is going to use the reggie increase to create a trail system. The enviro whackos are trying to block it because they think the trails will be on "protected/sensitive state forests" in the Catskill and Adirondack region. If the trail system gets shot down, the extra $15 will cover next years reggie instead of creating a trail fund.
Now of course, all of this has yet to take place, but it isn't worth getting your panties all in a bunch just yet. You can help out the cause by putting a bug in your local representatives ear though.

Also, for the time being it looks like about the only riders safe from the law on Tugg Hill are riding dual sport bikes

I plan to contact my representative with that "bunched feeling in my panites" as you say scooter so that they recognize that I am passionate in my belief that we need legal space to ride. We should have to haul for endless miles to find a decent spot!
