Trail Map Downloads: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/recreation/ohv/

Good chance to explore a new area if you have never been. Moderately high altitude, so it should be cooler than the valley!

We will stage from Miller Canyon, near Lake Silverwood. Take I-15 north toward Cajon Pass, and exit at Hwy 138. Go east on 138 toward Lake Silverwood, and in around 14 miles turn left at a sign that says "Miller Canyon Unit". Immediately turn right onto forest road 2N37. Staging area is in a couple hundred yards up the road. You will need an adventure pass for parking.....

Probably meet around 9:00 (????).

Can you guys tell me what the conditions of this area would be this weekend? Are the trails passable by a beginner? Is there still snow in the area? I've checked the forest service website, and it looks like these trails are open, but I would call the ranger station before I drove up to be sure.
Thanks!

I have heard the roads are all open around Miller Canyon. What are you riding???

Miller Canyon catches more snow than the surrounding area, and it is very shady in many spots. I don't think you will find any "snow", but you may find some ice patches. Might be a little muddy in places, and the water crossings should all be nice and full.

The roads are all easy beginner stuff. The trails tend to be tight and semi-technical.

Best thing is to print out a map, and stage from Miller Canyon and just go out and explore........

I may ride it on Monday (1/21???).

Cool! I'm a beginner riding a 2005 Honda 400ex. I've done exactly that, printed out all the maps from the link you gave above, and will stage at Miller Canyon. I'm aiming for Saturday morning, as my M-F's are taken up...

From the Miller Canyon map it looks like all the trails between Silverwood Lake and the 173 add up to about 20 miles of riding. I might try do those trails and ride over to Crab Flats and back. Once I get out there I'll start exploring.

Thanks for all your info!

I think everything up to Deep Creek is open, but beyond that it got hit pretty hard by the fires. 3N34 between the Deep Creek crossing and Crab Flats was still closed last I heard. This section is the most technical part of the whole trail system. Lots of big rocks!!! I have ridden it on my 400EX, but I usually prefer the Rancher 4X4 for that section.

Recon, a couple of guys from work are thinking about taking the trip you and the Hun and la90045 took last year from Silverwood around Lake Arowhead. We will be going in a few weeks. I went back in the arecives(?spelling) and could not find that thread I thought you linked to one of mine posts when I was going to Bishop or somewhere. Thanks for any help I have my map of the area and I remember there is a turn off or something. Thanks

We rode there a couple times in recent weeks. There may be some snow left up high. Best to go in the early morning, before the snow melts and it gets all sloppy!
