YFZ 450 nitrous
#1
If I put a nitrous kit on my yfz do you think I would have any problems. I see boondockers has a kit and was considering putting it on but have heard a ton of horror stories about machines blowing up on the stuff. I just paid 7000 for the thing and dont want to destroy it thats why I have been considering the 13:1 piston and porting it. Let me know what you think. How long can you run the nitrous at one time.

As highly tuned as the YZF is from the factory, I doubt it would take too much nitrous abuse. The stock compression ratio is borderline for pump gas as it is. Any amount of nitrous use would require race gas.

In the sept. issue of dirtwheels they put one on a predator. They said they were doing 8 second shots and did 25 to 30, the bottle lasted all day. i'd probably do the piston, that way you get the performance all the time instead of 8 seconds at a time.

If you are thinking of putting Nitrous on your quad, do not put in high compression pistons. You will get detonation and much LESS horsepower (cause you cant go as high on the boost) than with stock pistons.
With stock pistons you could go 18 horsepower nitrous with high compression you would be lucky to go 9 horsepower unless you run extreme race gas.
On our z400 STOCK PISTONS we could go 15 hp and it never detonated and ran beutifully.
Nitrous works best on STOCK compression ratios, there is much more VOLUME to get the nitrous into. Same with cars, you need lower compression ratios and you will run better and less chance of detonation.
As far as blowing up the motor, that is simply what happens if for any reason for a split second the nitrous injects and the gas does not... pure nitrous injection in a wet nitrous system (N2o and fuel) without the GAS will melt down your piston in 5 seconds.
so, the answer is to make SURE you never interupt the fuel injection process or you shalt be rebuilding the motor, for a couple bucks.
I think the z400 would be awesome on nitrous, and I have a full nitrous kit for sale (I have two) one hs never been opened and the other was on our Z400. it is NOS systems c\kit for 500 usually. I'll sell it for 350.
its just sitting around. one of the boys thinks his 450 is way powerful enough and doesnt want any more power.

here is our z400 on nitrous 15 hp boost: Going up a hill called choke cherry, probably one of the most difficult hills in the Us, most z400's canteven climb it unless they have max mods. with our nitrous banshee it started at the bottom and shifted and accelerated up through three gears and hit the top about 35 mph.
