Belt Slippage
#1
My friends wife took my 2000 Kodiak through a serious mudhole. After we pulled it out, it had the power of a wet noodle. I pulled off the clutch breather tube going out the back, and it was full of muddy water. Can I take the belt cover off and hose it down to clean it, or would that be a major mistake? Whats the next step here?

it wont hurt it. just be careful not to spray to much where the clutch weights are, because of the grease. If the water was as muddy as you say, i would do it as soon as possible. Before I snorkeled my GRIZZ I filled my tranny twice, luckily i was in clean running streams both times. I still took the cover off when i got home but there wasnt any problem.

This happened Saturday morning. I got home, took the cover off, it was filled with mud. I gave it a quick hose off, dried it, and let it sit. I was hoping it would dry out by now, but hasn't. She rode it for about 1/2 hr after the mud bog. Could the belt have worn down from the grit? It only goes about 5 mph, but the rpm's are high. I have a big ride this weekend, hoping to get it on the road/trails.

After paying dealers anywhere from $48-$60 an hour, you learn to do some things yourself. Anyway, I fixxed the problem. I took the primary clutch cover off. You should have seen the mud in there. I had to clean it out. Start the bike, rev motor, which forced more mud out, and repeat about ten times. The pile of mud was unbelievable. I still dont know how that much got in there without going over the snorkel. I still love the bike.
