Those old 400L Sportsmans and Explorers were pretty fast. They were pretty crappy too when it came to keeping them running. Chain drive and all didn't hurt much. I think it would be pretty close. I have a friend who has a 97 Sportsman that I rode a long time ago. I'd like to see how close he would come to my 660. And I'd put my Griz up against a Warrior any day. Last Warrior I rode was a 94 model and that was some 8 years ago at least, but I don't think it would hang with the 660, even with the weight difference. For some reason, I'm thinking the 400 2-stroke would give me a better run. But thats all seat of the pants guesswork, and over time I've probably forgotten how fast the Warrior actually was.

The scrambler 2x4 beats warriors not the Explorer or the 4x4 scrambler. You have to take in effect the extra weight and the drag from the front wheels. And Warriors kill the Explorer, haven't raced a 4x4 scrambler but they are the same basic thing as an Explorer

well first of all all the 4x4 scramblers have on command 4 wheel drive so they can be2x4's too but i know that both the scrambler 400 and 500 h.o. will deffinatly beat a warrior and i never rode a 400l or a explorer but it seemes that those 2 stroke 400's polaris has go pritty qucik

My friend used to have a 400 Explorer. It did about 70 or so when it was running. He rebuilt it 3 times in less than a year, needless to say he does not have it anymore.

Not to brag or talk up the utilities but the 400l polaris were and still are pretty quick machines. When mine had in the neighborhood of about 5000 miles on it. it would easily take a blaster( never ran with a warrior). It would also show a 600 grizzly whats up. Needless to say i sank it last spring right after the ice went off my lake. I pulled it to shore drained the airbox and carb fired it up and drove it up to my yard. let it sit and idle and the piston skirt ended up on my belly pan with part of the case as well. I had it bored ten over and put it back together with all stock parts. I recently went on a ride with some friends. My girlfriend was on my 700 twin and i am not as fast as it but i can keep up with a 660 pretty easily.

I am also run 27 inch vampires right now. It will burry the speedo past the 60 mark.

With some engine work, you can make a 400 2-stroke Polaris of any flavor pretty much Dangerous.
