FREAKIN DANG POP UP ADDS!!!
#34
I hear you guys there. It took me a month to fix one of my friends computers and it ended up being damn spy ware. The Internet would connect, but couldnt surf. I talked to the Internet tech for a couple of hours one day. I used Ad Aware (free download) and removed 444 items from their computer and about that many from mine. I use Norton Antivirus and it works pretty good, no problems with that.

A couple of things to do.....
1. PAY for a good anti virus program - I like McAfee or PCCillin by Trend Micro. Worth every penny, set it to check for updates at least daily!! I don't know how many people I've seen who install a virus program but never update it - if you don't update it's almost useless.
2. Install one of the free pop up blockers like the Google toolbar or Yahoo toolbar - they both seem to work great for me.
3. AdAware 6.0 is a must - run it at LEAST weekly.
4. Turn off the Messenger service if running Windows 2000 or XP - you can do this in Control Panels - Services. No need to have this running at home.
5. If you have a DSL or Cabel Modem connection - either install a software firewall or buy a hardware firewall. The hardware firewalls can be picked up for around $50 and I believe are better - you don't have to do as much configuration either.
I do all the above on my home pc and haven't had a virus in 2 years, pop ups are very, very rarely a problem (maybe 1 in 100 get through) and I've got a cable connection. Your only looking at about $100 and the time to set it all up and you'll be happier and more secure.

Yes, hardware based routers (eg, linksys, netgear, dlink etc) all operate on NAT technology and act the same as a 'stealth' software based firewall. If you get a linksys, don't turn on remote management. It's been known for a long time for it's vulnerabilities. A hardware based firewall will not block popups though simply because of the fact that if a bad ActiveX control, spyware and web based exploit(eg, b3d projector) is present on your machine, it will bypass anything you have simply because it won't be your browser calling for a new window, it will be independant as if you just opened a new browser window. A big problem with these things are simply based upon the fact that Internet Explorer is the most popular browser out there, thus every bad guy knows how to manipulate it. If you don't mind switching browsers, try Opera. The googlebar is good for blocking popups, however it cannot block independant popups nor cannot it prevent software from manipulating your browser settings in the registry and tracking every site you goto and what you search for.

get rid of all the spyware first by installing a spysweeper. You can download one for free off download.com After that you shouldnt have any popup ads. Then to keep them away get a popup stopper
