Adware can be designed to anything the programmer wants. Some adware is designed to give random popup ad's about any topic specified by the creator of the adware. Others are more intelligent and watch the sites you go to and look at what you search for on the web and give you pop up ad's about that topic. Some adware change your browser settings to be able to track you and have more control over your browser and be able to bypass popup ads. Some adware will rob your email address and address book and send it's contents back to the creator and you will start getting spam mail...it can do anything depending on how it was made and how it gets into your machine.

I download adaware for free and it will stop all those pop-ups. Just run it every once in awhile and your good to go.

Default FREAKIN DANG POP UP ADDS!!!

While I like and sometimes use Netscape (especially for e-mail), using it to block all popups is a bad idea. There are numerous instances where pop-ups are desireable & you'll get frustrated with it & end up eventually turning it off, or wondering why some sites don't seem to operate correctly.

A couple people have mentioned to get some virus software & that's a very good idea (especially if you're click happy, or allow children to use your system) - many viruses out there install ad-ware, spy-ware, keystroke loggers, and/or remote control software on your computer. Problems caused by these viruses can range from annoyances like pop-ups, to really bad stuff like your bank account passwords, credit card numbers, or other personal data being exposed to people you'd rather not have this information.

I recently worked on a system that had a pop up generator that was difficult to get rid of. I tried everything from manually deleting files, to removing bad keys from the registry, to AdAware, to Norton AV - Norton AV corporate edition wouldn't even find it. Ended up using AVG, a free antivirus program to find and kill the virus. AVG is available at http://www.grisoft.com/

Using a combination of AVG, Adaware (or similar spyware locating software), and a real popup blocker will usually do the trick in removing practically all pop up ads from your system.

Personally the 3 softwares I use are

AVG for antivirus
AdAware for spyware detection & removal
Proxomitron for killing pop-ups from the browser

Using these 3 programs I forget pop-up ads even exist on the net (until I use someone else's computer). Also, with these 3 programs properly configured (especially the proxomitron), all other websites operate correctly & desireable pop up windows work as they should.

Also keep in mind that many toolbar add-ons also contain their own spyware. Google toolbar is no exception, depending on it's settings. If you run google toolbar or something similar, search the web and find the settings to turn off their spyware capabilities.

Good luck.

Okay put on google and it was counting how many blocks it makes. Just coming in and out of this forum I had 7 blocks. Then I went and put the adware that was mentioned and it removed 24 spyware items. Now the google has not had to block anything. Thanks guys.

Run Ad Aware to get rid of the spyware, and make sure you update to the newest reference file! Then Download Avant web browser! It is based on internet explorer technology and has a built in popup blocker and some other cool add ons like tabbed windows, so all you web pages stay in one browser window insted of opening a bunch of windows in your task bar. No popups after that!!! The other good thing about Avant is that its way faster then Netscape!!! I never had a version of netscape that ran anywhere near as fast as IE! Avant does...

If you want to get rid of just the pop-ups, change your browser. It is an internal thing in Internet Explorer that will let pop-ups in no matter what you do. Most software will stop most pop-ups, but will not stop all. The browser that I use is called Mozilla. It has a function in it that stops the pop-ups you want or it will let through pop-ups you want to see. I have it set to stop all and i haven't seen a pop-up in months, and the best thing of all, IT'S FREE!
