I have heard of this being done by many dealers from many different customers, and I can't say with certainity that it hasn't been cone at ours as well, but I can tell you if it was done at ours, it wasn't intentional. I will tell you taht a common practice among ALL dealers is that their repair estimates are 1.25 times the book rate. This goes for the auto industry as well in most cases. This to cover any unforseen part replacement or extra labor that they didn't see having to do the first time around........
As for the high ammount of your buddy's estimate, sometimes dealers and independant shop alike over-do it on exactly what need replaced to ensure that everything will be 100% fresh and a chance of another breakdown is unlikely.
An example would be a transmission failure. Lets say that 3rd gear went out. Only the 3rd gear on the main shaft was bad, but the dealer is most likely going to replace every gear and both shafts so that he will feel comfortable warrantying the work.
BUT....with the attitude of this partiular dealer you describe.....it doesn't sound like any of the above apply to him. If his estimate was high for a good reason, I would think the dealer would be saying why.
By the way, what region of Alabama are you located? North?South?West?East? I race out there from time to time.
Vakero,
Thanks for the comments. My pleasure. Hope you get your Grizz update taken care of.

Tellico,
I don't know when I will be heading backout there right now. I've got to go to Monster Mountain next Monday, but it's an official dealer invite only event. Sorry.
MillCreek may be something I'm interested in though. I have had a couple others mention that track. I might sent ya a PM in a couple months regarding that.
Babycakes,
No problem. I figured that was the case............. Ofcourse, anyone would by reading the topic.LOL

Update:
I went to my local dealer on Friday, at
first they tried to give me the run around
and say yes their is a problem but I would have
to pay for the heat kit. However, after I told him about
the U.S. recal or update on the Grizzly he took my
serial number and amazingly found a document saying
that if it was within a certain serial number range
they would replace it. But it is on back
order... so now I will wait and see if it actually gets
replaced.
Thanks

Oh I agree that it is normal to ask for my serial number which he did
have on hand because that is where i bought the bike however, he
tried to give me the run around by saying the kit was for sale and that
it could not be replaced free by Yamaha. However, when I mentionned to
him what I found on the Internet and the US Yamaha site... he turned the
page of the document he was looking at and that is when he mentionned the
serial number.
