I know that when the Raptor came out, it spit out transmissions, and with a family now, I can not afford to get something that will eat me in breakdown costs. I am leaning toward the Yamaha, but no matter what brand we prefer, it is a proven fact Hondas usually have a better track record with breakdowns. Thanks for the help and advice in advance!
Pic a color and go drop the coin - there's nothing to worry about.

the only major problem that I noticed, is the sticky shifting from 1st to 2nd... a quick return to the dealership, to grind off the "burr" off the shift pawl limiter plate should have you up and shifting more smoothly in no time....

I still have a lil difficulty in shifting between 1st and 2nd with high revs, so I might need to take it back in again... (gonna have the mechanic ride it hard the next time I catch him out riding.)

about that oil plug popping out? Is this doing it on all of them or just ones that have too much oil in them from the factory? I know there is a replacement aluminum plug, but I would think Yamaha would fix that before it ever left. If the plug pops out when the motor is running hard, that could mean you have hot oil on your leg, not to mention the quad may suffer also. Whats up with this? Other than the batteries these are the only 2 problems I have heard of. I also heard a lot of the batteries were not charged right from the factory. Somewhere else I heard they only recharge above 5000rpm so if you are running easy with them like before break in the battery is going to need to be on a charger. Anyone else hear similar things, I am really serious about buying one and want to know every little problem.

I have had the Water pump seals, Bearing, and impeller shaft replced, new A-arms due to crash, and some times stickey shifting from 3rd to 4th and lose the holeshot. I all most lost the engine case screws but tightend them up. That is just a up keep thing the yfz has a lot of vibration at high RMP's so stuff is going to rattle lose.
But other than that no problems. Two of the things are from rider error LOL.

I figure if you are going to beat on it you will have to replace somthing no matter what you get.

My friend poped both headlights when he turned them on then switched to high beams and poped those also.

hey man, my name is mark dubois, quad pro racer for new mexico, i won my state championsh on a yfz450 (stock) against 20 thousand dollar bikes, the yfz is a great bike except it will eventually start messing up, im telling u this cause i know how hard and how much stress these things are, i didnt like hondas at first but wen my yfz was blown i raced my budies stock honda against amazing bikes, first time i rode it was on the track against 15 other pros i won it, i felt so comfortable on it, hands down i will choose honda over yamaha also hondas are built a little better, they will both eventually mess up but honda wiill last longer.... so ride hard man. also ive raced all machines suzuki 450 honda 450 and yamaha 450... the order i typed them out is the order that i like the best
