If the flywheel key broke about all that it would take out is the stator. Why would the piston and valves connect? The cam gear is pressed on and has a sepperate key. I'm getting more confused.

It was the balancer key that sheered off. Oh and if the flywheel key breaks off it doesn't necessarily do that much damage, just depends on the situation.
gary - a kegerator would be nice hehe!
farmstud - I know! I should just freakin stayed here! Makes me mad! If I got a 450 I would promise myself NOT to dip into the engine. The only thing I would prolly do in the engine is the cam mod. All my other money would go into looks, handling, weight loss, and a few OUTSIDE performance mods (intake, exhaust, and etc). Also yes my crank is totally busted and I have to buy a new one cause last time the engine blew I had it welded which makes it pretty much impossible to fix.

Unless we are talking about the crank keyway or the counterbalancer?? Those 2 could do damage but the only way they break is if they collide with something else or are left loose.
No aftermarket flywheel key is better than stock, changing it to a different metal nulls the benefit of having a key to protect the crank. The degree keys are crap, heard of so many failures in the last 2 weeks.

So, if the engine does back spin and the L&A holds its own then something will give. .

I posted and corrected myself, it was the balancer key that broke.
When you turn off the engine with high compression the engine actually backs up and turns slightly in the opposite direction. When this happened it backed up and hit the key breaking it off. Instead of the oneway going out (which it shoulda done) it broke the key. The one way didnt break cause it's WAY better than stock making it break the weaker link, the balancer key.

not cool on the balancer key, that sucks but be glad cause it could have been a total loss, you are lucky.
But the one-way and starter have nothing to do with the balancer and very little to do with the crank. When the motor turns backwards it will spin the starter motor backwards aswell.
