Winch for a Grizzy???
I just bought an 05 Grizzly and I am going to buy a warn winch. Does anyone have a recommendation for which size winch to buy, either a 2.5 or 3.0? Your help is appreciated. I used a 2000 superwinch on my Kodiak 450 and it was junk as far as I am concerned. It would not pull me out of an ice patch.

hey gasser1052,I have an 02griz and picked up a hmf w/ 150 or 155 jetting and k n filter.You can definitely tell the difference.you will get the power back to wheels.the hmf pipe in my opinion will give you that snappy takeoff..im looking at a new cdi-box and regulator..the cdi is going to give more rpms.I havent got any new tires yet,but im running the 660rhino stocks tires and they have plenty of bite...The hmf pipe will have low and mid power.I heard the big gun is good,but i havent heard anyone w/one yet...

Just a few thought on winches ...
We have a Warn 2500 on both of our Grizzlys, and had another one on a 2003 Kodiak 450, and all of them have had enough pulling power. But when it comes to the winch controller you are going to use with the winch, I would recommend going with the old style remote controller with the long cord that you plug into a power plug on the winch. On our Grizzlys we have the new fangled rocker switch controller that mounts on the handlebars, and it is a stupid design if you ask me. It is fine if you are sitting on the ATV using the winch, such as on level ground in the mud. But if you are winching up mountainsides that are too steep to be able to sit on the ATV while doing the winching, then the handlebar mounted rocker switch is the stupidist thing in the world, because you can't reach it while standing in front of the ATV trying to watch what the winch is pulling the ATV up and over. And when it comes time to re-spool the cable, it is very hard to reach the rocker switch while you are standing in front of the ATV re-spooling the cable. So it is almost a two man job every time you use the winch, just so you can get the cable re-spooled properly.
And another thing, ... my wife rolled her Grizzly two weeks ago, and the winch got ruined from just a simple little rollover. She hooked a big rock with one of the front tires, which flipped the Grizzly on its lid and smashed the handlebar mounted rocker switch for the winch. When the switch got smashed it shorted out something inside the switch, and the winch started having what looked like seizures. First it started unspooling, and unspooled about three feet of cable. Then it started switching back and forth from spooling out, to spooling in, to spooling out again, to spooling in again, in very rapid succession, almost like it could not decide whether it wanted to spool in, or out. Then the winch started smoking really really bad, and basically went up in smoke, with the motor burning out entirely, and everything going dead. The winch is toast now. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img] And there was NO tension on the winch cable at all, it was just dangling in the air. I turned off the ignition key to try and stop the winch from smoking to death, and that made no difference. And I tried to change the winch to free-spool, and could not get it to dissengage. So I basically had to watch the winch cook itself to death, because I could not get it to stop. That was dumb, there should be a fuse or something to prevent that from happening. The dealer installed the winch and there is a fuse on the hot power lead, in fact, but it did not save the winch. And this was a really minor rollover accident that did not bend either rack, or the handlebars. All it did was put a tiny white crease in the front fender plastic, smash the winch control rocker switch, and fry the winch motor.
Anyway, ... just my 2 cents worth.
