Yeah, I tried google searching, but had no luck. Haynes and other service manuals give you a VIN range for each year, but I don't have one handy. No big deal, just wanted to know.

Default Determine Year Model With VIN??

The 8th digit from the end, wil tell you the year. On any 17 digit VIN this is true. Since 2001, the number has been 1 for 2001, 2 for 2002, and so on. Prior to that they used letters. Skipping letters like S (looks like 5), I (looks like 1), Z (like a 2) and so on. A 2000 has a Y, 1999 has a X, 1998 a W, 1997 V, and so on. This works on cars, trucks, atvs, boats, anything using 17 digits.
If you have an older on and cant figure it out, I can so let me know.

It's the 10th digit in the vin that tells the year not the 8th.

Let me correct my misinterpretation of your post. The 8th digit from the end is the 10th digit when reading from left to right.
