radials are key due to the wider footprint and less sidewall flex. They will help make it less tippy in turns. Anyone who's actually ridden a kodiak will know they aren't exactly planted around high speed turns..

The carlisle badlands xtr are a trail/mud tire that is a radial. Supposedly they perform a lot better than the outlaw radials. The atr's are mostly a trail tire, they aren't great in mud that's deep/over the tires. They are comparable to the stock tires in mud if that's any gauge. Everywhere else they are unbelievable.

thats the Old Outlaw Radials, not the new MST radials though..... they have compaired these new radials to 589s, mudlites, swampwitch, ect... and it has supposivly out performed.... but i have just read all of that... i can't believe it all too much.... plus with the MSTs they have the wrap around tread, on the sidewalls to help in the mud, and the sipings are to help on slick surfaces... which up here in canada, We have alot of ICE for a good amount of the year.... Also the weight of the MSTs are roughly 31.2 pounds which is a few ounces less than the 589s per size.... i think i have made up my mind i hear they perform pretty good in the mud and they take on some of the outlaw characteristics....

Highlifter is in Louisiana, where they ride in swampy mud nonstop. That's where they are geared toward. I know they look and sound cool, but really evaluate what percentage of your riding is in 2feet or deeper mud. 589's and the other tires you listed all stink at trail handling compared to some of the tires I listed. If you want a bias ply tire, the dirt devils are a good choice.. Frankly, if you are getting a mud tire, don't bother with a radial...the aggressive tread kinda negates all the smooth riding/good handling benefits of a radial IMO. ATV magazine recently did a tire shootout and the badlands xtr was at the top of the list with ATR's . I can't tell you how well these atr's hook up, it's unreal.

I had the bearclaws and just recently got dirt devils, i'm much happier. as far as radials go, i agree with lightman. i have heard good things about the atr's but have also been told that they have too soft of a sidewall. I have heard great things about the maxxis bighorns and that they have a much tougher sidewall than the atr's. of course, these tires are not mud tires and won't clean out that good. a sacrifice is made somewhere, however. another tire to look at is the bridgestone mudhhook extreme. this tire looks more geared for mud. as for size i would go for 26" because with this tire size generally comes with deeper lugs, with a few exceptions. i'll try to find a good pic of the mudhooks.

I have a 2005 Kodiak 400 and I went with the Ducks Unlimited Wetlands AKA the Carlisle ACT tires AKA the Polaris PXTs. I got Douglas rims They are used on the 2005 Sportsman and the 2005 Bombardier Outlander XT. They have 3/4 inch tread and are the most aggressive looking radial out there. 26x8-12 can be had for $62.38 26x10-12 can be found for $72.33 I just ordered wheels and tires and wanted to share my conclusions. I wanted lighter tires as I only have a 400 quad.

I just bought a 05 kodiak 450 yesterday and had them change the tires before I left the parking lot with it. I put ITP mudlite 25's on it. I haven't rode it much yet, but we have alot of snow and ice on the ground now and it has no problem. Very satisfied so far!
