joined this forum just so i could post here in this thread so.. hi everyone
but on to my post... i have a 91 yamaha warrior (very first atv) iv owned dirt bikes an even a 3 wheeler once... fliped it an sold it the next day.. iv had my warrior for over a year now an i ride it every weekend on some land my aunt owns.... when i got the bike it came with a mx helmet an chest protector an boots... everythign was to small for me but the helmet.. i wore it 90% of the time.. and when i wasnt wearing it my cousin was... we went on a really long ride about 6-7 months ago... got lost an had to come back on the road(bad idea!) we were screwing around alittle an going way to fast dwn the road.. came around a sharp blind turn an there was a mail truck on the wrong side of the road... we both went off the road an my cousins back right tire hit a pole an fliped him over the handlebares.. he was wearing my mx helmet.. i wasnt wearing anything but boots... that kept me from breaking my leg btw.. but thats another story.. my cousin landed head first on the side of the road.. the helmet may have kept his skull safe.. but the mx visor on my helmet nearly broke his neck... thankfully a few weeks later he was walking around again it only sprained his neck an back pretty bad.... my helmet no longer has the visor an i never ride without boots an my helmet (sorry for the long @$S post)

Figured I'd give a quick story since everybody else is. I'm 27 and have always worn my helmet wene riding aggressivly. Use to have a banshee I flipped on a jump, threw me on ground and front bumper hit me hard right in the back of the head.(no injuries) Have a z-400 now flipped on big hill at the badlands (indiana), rear swingarm carrier hit me hard directly in the helmet.(no injuries) I think both of these accidents were severe enough to kill me without a helmet.
Notice I stated "wene riding aggressively" I now will put on helmet AND goggles before moving my quad. My son followed my poor example last weekend wene we went on a slow paced ride for the sole reason of clearing some new trails in our grandpa's 30 acre woods. Niether of of us had helmets. I told him to grab safety glasses before we left since we would be running chainsaws and riding through thick brush, of course he forgot. I should have called it off but it was about a twenty minute ride back home. We got to work and wene he rode over a small hill he caught a thorn in the eye.
We have been to the eye specialist 3 times this week and he's sceduled for eye surgery on tuesday, he will possibly lose vision partially or moderatly in one eye(permanently) I feel absolutly horrible and I should. If his vision is permanently impaired it will be completly my fault for setting a poor example and I will never forgive myself.
Please think of the example you set for your children if you have them and imagine the feeling you would have if they were hurt due to a poor example(like my situation)
If you are already responsible enough to do so then you deserve a pat on the back.
