Default Raptor vs. YFZ 450 (Race)

Went riding last weekend and raced my buddies freshly built YFZ 450. He has GYTR full exhaust, ESR Intake, 13:1 standard bore piston, full head port, re-jet, revbox and hotcams. I have an '04 raptor with a 686cc kit. Full Yosh pipe, 12.5:1 piston, full head port, Dynatech Rev Box, Stage 1 Hotcam, open air box and +6 extended swingarm. I'm 6'8 and 330 lbs. and my buddy is 5'5 and 160 lbs. soaking wet. So I already went into this race with low expectations. But we lined up on a straight away and took off. I jumped him right off the line and by 2nd gear I had two bike lengths. It wasn't till 5th gear that he started knocking on my door and eventually passed. We did this a number of times, and I was happy to say the least about the 'ol raptors performance condsidering the 170 lbs. weight difference. I give him props, that 450 screams. Anybody else got any good races.

Were you racing 300ft or more.If it was 300ft then you beat him straight up.. Just imagine that you weighed the same amount as him... you would have waxed him bad..

Other than weight, i dont see how he could be passing you topend. I thought those bikes were most mid and low. He has that motor work, but you have more, i would have guessed youd take him all the way. hmm.--Rider1169

We raced longer than 300ft. By the 300ft marker, I had him by at least 2 bike lengths, but we probably raced 800ft-900ft total. By then he was able to run me down.

Look in a 300ft drag since you was in 5ft gear.. you beat him in a drag race. That also depends if you was raceing for top end too.. That would be a different story.. but you could have geared your bike to go top end.. And you probably would have beat him also.... Thats awesome... 1 for the raptors...

My bike is geared pretty low right now. I think I have 12 & 42 tooth sprockets in right now. I like to keep it low and torquey at my weight. Weight is a huge factor in racing.

I think the possibilty would be that a stage1 hotcam was for bottom end a mid. that would be a notion why the 450 was able to reel him in.. Hey why a stage1 and not a stage2

Because of my size I wanted as much torque as I could get,so I went with the stage 1. I was thinking of changing to the stage 2, but I think I just need to realize that at my size, I'll never be really fast up top.

Look, there is a guy that I know that is 6'4-5 his weight is about 280-290 and I weigh about 205.. We almost have the same set up but has the barker pipes and a bigger carb I mean way bigger.. and we both have stage twos.. Well I get him out the hole and he reels me in and passes me on the other end before the end 300ft

Raptorboy, I don't think you'll be dissapointed with the switch from the stage 1 to a stage 2. I didn't notice any real seat of the pants low end torque loss when I went to a stage 2 from a stage 1. I did notice a good seat of the pants top end pull with the stage 2 over the stage 1. I weigh in at around 250 most days. The good side is that Hotcams does not require a core so if you don't like the stage2 you can always put the stage 1 back in and sell the stage 2. The dual stage springs are an easy change, just go to Sears and get their valve spring tool for $19.99 I belive it was. Piece of cake to use and change springs. Good to have even with a stage 1 if your useing high rpms alot anyway, imo. You'll just be out a few dollars and some time for the experence if you don't like the stage 2. With the 12:5:1 piston I seriously doubt you'll notice any torque loss anywhere in the rpm range. jmo
