NEW Raptor - problems on first day
Hey all, (PLease bare with me guys, I am in the process of trying to improve my mechanical skills when it comes to working on quads, so if my questions sound retarded I apologise, I am just looking for help) well I picked up my 2003 LE Rapor 660R today, I had to drive 3 hours to get it but hey it was worth it. I am kicking my *** though because I chose to pick it up today without the mechanics at the dealership giving it a once over, oil change, plug change, etc. I did this for a few reasons #1) I bought the bike from a car dealership, they found it for me locally, and I didnt want to give them a chance to potentially hide any issues with it, I wanted to see it exactly as the kid that owned it left it, #2)because If I didnt get it today I wouldnt have time to spend 3 hours one way 6 hours round trip to pick the bike up. It runs perfect, no bog at all, oil looks good, however I was a little concerned because the oil actually smelt like gas, and was very light in colour. I have never saw this b4, should I be worried?
Anyway my bigger problem was that immediately after getting it home I noticed that the chain was pretty loose, so I took it out to my buddy who owns a 2001 660 Raptor to get him to adjust it as he has done his many times over. The problem we ran into was that the tensioner was already at the last mark on the housing. So we had no more room. We never looked into removing a link as neither of us know how.
1) Do u require any special tools to remove a link ?
So any way we tightened everything back up as tight as we can (which was still loose) i road it home (about 15 mins) just as I am getting home I hear this horrible noise that sounds like grinding, I quickly notice that I have 4-5 teeth on the front sprocket that the tip has snapped off.
2) I am assuming this happened because I was retarded and drove it with the loose chain? Am I correct ?
So now I have to cal the dealer on Mon to order a new front sprocket and a chain
3) How much will a new sprocket and chain run me, any idea please!
4) Am I wasting my money getting the dealer to put it on or is this something I could do myself?
5) Do I need any special tools to install a new front sprocket and new chain ?
6) Does the chain come already connected or do I need to instal a link to complete it?
7) Is there anywhere I could pick up some step by step instructions for this ?
8) I am real interested in hearing how much a chain and sprocket will run me ?
Sorry for all the questions guys, and I apologise if they are stupis, but I am really looing for some help here

Click on the link in my signature. Go to the bottom of the page and download the Raptor manual. Use it to change the sprockets and chain as well as the general maintanances. Go to www.rockymountainatv.com and check the prices for their chains and sprockets. I'd get the front and rear sprocket along with a good ATV chain 520 O ring chain. They sell them in sets but aren't always in stock. If you buy each seperate they usualy have them in stock. Front sprocket is a 13 tooth, though I'd reccomend a 12 tooth. The rear sprocket stock is 40 tooth. You'll need a chain breaker tool. Get that from your dealer but unless your rich I'd not buy their chains and sprockets. Way over priced imo. The chains come in 100 links, you only need 92 if I remember correctly. It's all easy to do. You'll need a 1 1/4" socket or the mm equivelant to get the front sprocket off.

Anyone have any thoughts on the oil smelling like gas?
Also, we just noticed one more thing that actually could be a good thing or a bad thing, u can tell he has had some work done to the top half, u can tell it has been apart. Not necessarily a bad thing I guess

Thanks for all the help, sprockets and chains are simple easy fix, oil change too.
However I am still concerned witht the fact that my oil smells like gas. Should this concern me ? Is it a early sign that something else is wrong? Or can I just change the oil and forget about it?

i wouldnt buy anything from a dealer ever! go to rockymoauntainatv.com to order all you stuff for your bike. Pick up a new chain(o-ring) costs more. And a set of steel spockets. go back to stock 13/40, or maybe a 12/40. I think your sprockets are huge and thats why their is no room left to adjust. Pick up a chain breaker also. as far as the tank.
chain the oil, drain the tank, drain the carbs and clean them, new plug, and oil filer. STAY AWAY FOM THE DEALER.

Oil smelling like gas could be a problem. I'd do an oil change and an oil filter change also. I use Bosch 3300 for my black and white Raptor and STP 6607 for my Blue Raptor. The Bosch is a black filter the STP is a blue filter. They are each less than half what a factory Yamaha filter costs. As for the top end being apart. He may have had a cam installed once and took it out previous to selling to you or maybe just had to fix the top end. Shouldn't be a concern as long as everything runs fine.
