Default Shifter Problems on a 1995 Warrior

Hey, I got a 1995 Yamaha warrior with a 366 big bore kit. Ummm I bought it two days ago and the electric start didnt work so I jumped the sylinoid and the starter spun but nothing happened... so I took the starter off and the flywheel and stuff was gone... so that sucks.. so I gotta pull start it to run it but anyways, I try to shift sometimes and I cant shift up or down... A guy I know said I need to move the shifter linkage up about 5 notches.. I undid the bolt but I cant get it to move up notches and I cant figure out how to take it off and do it. Anyone know how to do this? Also when I put it in reverse, I can back up but I cant get it to shift back into forward without turning it off.. Like I shift into reverse and I can back up, but when I try to shift to going back forwards(When im in neutral) I cant get it to shift, it goes about 1/2 way and thats all... but if I turn it off, I can switch it forward right away. Any ideas about that? My Clutch tensioner recently broke and im ordering a new one, might that be it because the clutch is too loose? Thanks for the help.

Edit:
Ok well I finally got the shifter part fixed... but I still dont know about the reverse and forward thing. anyone got any Ideas on that? Also How do I check my transmission oil? Where is the plug so I can drain and change it. Sorry if Im newbie. I do some automotive work but 4-wheelers are a new thing for me. Thanks for everything.

Also, How much 10-w40 oil should I put in it? I pulled the drain plug at the bottom and it drained out almost a gallon... I dont know if thats good or not. I put 3 quarts back in. Did I put too much? I checked the dip-stick and it was a little high.. but idk.

Did you use automotive oil in your warrior?

10w-40 Motor oil. Also on the bolts to tighten the chain, mine are sort of rusted and I wanted to replace them, Can I go to the local hardware store and buy em? They will be the same size right? cause I got a bunch of bolts and nuts and I find some that look the same, same threading and everything, but when I try to screw them into the origional nut, they got most of the way in but not all the way through it, and when I try to screw the old bolt into a new nut of the same threading, the bolt doesnt go through either. and when I put the old bolt and the old nut together, they still dont go through(All of this is done by hand). So I dont know.

Taharnak, you need to make sure you oil is wet clutch compatible. It's best to stick w/ motorcycle oil, and never ever use an automotive synthetic. That's what Pelphrey was referring to, I think.

How would I check to see if its wet clutch compatible? What about the bolts? Should I try and put the new bolts in? Ive been reading like EVERYTHING I could search for about the warriors on this site that had to do with problems. The oil I drained out of the engine was pretty black, like 10w-30 and the oil that got put in was pretty clear, it was 10w-40. Any Ideas about the Transmission not worknig though? I fixed the gear shifter but I havent tried the reverse/forward cause I broke the cord on my pull start today because the gears for the electric start got taken out before i bought it. LoL, Also whats a good way to put the spring back in the bottom of the pull start? It sorta... fell out when I was taking the drum out. This is a pain in the ***... lol. (Cant think of any other questions...) I got AIM if any of you can help me on there, my s/n is Jaeden09

you need to get the right oil in their. you CANT use that oil, it has friction modifiers witch will make your clutch slip/stick and thats why its hard to shift. Get the right oil in their and see if the problem continues, use Yamalube oil, you can get it at your local dealer. also, make sure you have 1-2mm of freeplay in your clutch cable.

Taharnak, considering the problems you've got, and are starting to get I suggest you get one of these. It should help you w/ all your problems, well most of them anyway.

Okay guys, Thanks for everything. I talked to a couple people about the oil before I changed it and they said to either use 10w-40 or Yamalube but they said Yamalube was really expensive. Anything about the Chain tensioner bolts? (copy and pasted the following) Also on the bolts to tighten the chain, mine are sort of rusted and I wanted to replace them, Can I go to the local hardware store and buy em? They will be the same size right? cause I got a bunch of bolts and nuts and I find some that look the same, same threading and everything, but when I try to screw them into the origional nut, they got most of the way in but not all the way through it, and when I try to screw the old bolt into a new nut of the same threading, the bolt doesnt go through either. and when I put the old bolt and the old nut together, they still dont go through(All of this is done by hand). Should I try and get the new bolts to fit? even if I have to put a little force into em?
