Being 14 years old and riding a 450cc ATV are not mutually exclusive. Experience, and having the ability to engage your brain when you hit the starter button are more important than just age if you ask me.
I have two sons that have been riding for a while now. Son #1 started at age 8 with a Honda XR 70 dirt bike, then moved to a TRX 90 ATV at age nine, then a 250 EX at age 11, then a 400 EX at age 12, then a YFZ 450 at age 13. He started desert racing his YFZ 450 when he was 14, and races right along side the adults. In fact, he and I actually race in the same class, being as there is no age bracket for the ATV class in the local desert race series. In the last race I finished 6th, and he finished 10th; and in the race before that I finished 5th, and he finished 9th. He also rides a YZ 125cc dirt bike, and rides it very well. Son #2 started at age 6 with a Polaris Scrambler 50, then moved to a Honda TRX 90 at age 7, then a Grizzly 125 at age 8. He also started riding dirt bikes with a Yamaha PW 50 at age 7, and has moved up to a Yamaha TTR-90 at age 9, and has had no problems with any of his ATVs or dirt bikes.
I went through all of that to make the point that a YFZ may not be too much for a 14 year old, my son started riding one when he was 13. It is amazing to me how fast kids learn how to ride, and being 14 does not necessarily exclude any ATV. The faster the ATV the more experience is needed, obviously, so be careful and have fun.
