Fuel injection adds NO more power than an engine with a properly tuned carb. What injection will do is allow smoother running under varying conditions, and possibly self-tuning ability when adding pipes, etc.
You are all Yamaha guys on this forum.... you know that the 700 engine is NOT just a bigger 660 engine; it's a new engine with a different head, etc. Any increase or change in power delivery from the 660 is due mostly to it being a new engine, not simply because it's fuel injected.

I feel the 700 will lead all the way and win by a few lengths over a piped, jetted, airbox modded 660. This is a whole new engine, so you really can't compare it to the old 660.

The fuel injection on the 700R doesn't really make the bike more powerfull, it makes it more efficiant by delivering the fuel more accurately. It makes for instant throttle response, and smoother fuel intake by the engine. It's just like the fuel injection on a street bike or a car, the more accurate the fuel delivery the less unburnt fuel it has to exhaust, giving you a cleaner burn = more efficiant engine. And I raced a 660 piped/jetted/airbox mod, and beat him over a half mile. Josh (the owner of the 660) has been riding for about 8 years and i've have rode with him many times. We switched bikes and raced again, the 700 won again by about the same margin. It felt like the 700 pulled harder throughout the gears with the exception of first gear, and he agreed. And i'm deffinately not saying that the modded 660 wasn't bad @ss, because it was an awesome ride. I haven't had the pleasure of riding or racing a 686 so I don't know how they would do together, but i'd say it would be a good race. Regardless, either are great bikes, and you're going to have a blast no matter witch one your riding. And 5th gear don't get much play on trails anyway, at least not around here. I got no mods on my 700 yet except for running with the airbox lid off.

49 hp from a pipe, jetting and filter? PLEASE!! Stock they only have about 34, maybe a little higher?
Don't forget that the 700 is a 686 that's all corked up but it won't be long before the mods start. I'm really looking forward to running into one sometime just to see how fast they are, should be fun.

Looks like when thew 700R gets some mods its going to be a beast. Ive heard something about maping for fuel injection, opposed to jetting for carbs.
