drive axle or drive gear 1 problem

drive axle or drive gear 1 problem
putting the tranny back together and came across a prob
the reverse counter gear (drive gear) does not sit in case properly
it rubs against the drive axle bearings. is the bearings supposed to be flush in the case? (mine pertrude 1" into case)
or is it something else?
