On paper I'm sure the YFZ whoops the 700s a$$ with power to weight ratios and what not (even though you never throw the 700s torque into any of these equaisions). It doesn't bother me in the slightest if you or anyone else don't believe that the 700 can and will hold its own. Thats fine..............but thats not going to change the fact that it does and I don't need any numbers to prove it. I just run em!!!!!

.....Well, numbers dont lie. I guess the 700's torque is making up for the weight and hp more than I think. I do think the 700 IS a trail quad, as that is specifically what yamaha intended and built it to be. I think its an incredibly good performing trail quad. Who ever said that a trail quad had to be slow? Sorry if I implied that, I was more making the point that one is a race motor, made to rev quick and high, and the other is a trail motor, made to not run out quick or high...but for more torque.
I guess I am going to have to talk to lady into modding the 700, because I would love to see how fast its going to be. Just cant make any sense of how the 700 is going to be knocking on my door like you all say, when it weighs so much more, has a slow revving motor, and makes less HP then what I am making with just bolt ons.
But whatever. Then again, maybe you guys have different results racing in the sand. We are always in the dirt.

Sand is somewhat of an equalizer. Sand offers a lot more resistance which will effect the motor with more torque less regardless of the weight of the machines. I am not saying it overcomes the weight disadvantage of the Raptor by itself, but it does level the field a bit. Sand effects a motor more like rotational mass does and less in the way that dead weight does.
I have the same experience as Yfzfryguy. I have raced them both quite a bit. The Raptor stock with the spark arrestor removed vs a bolt on YFZ. Races were traded back and forth. Between the two riders, the lighter rider always won by about 1 length. Pretty impressive rides, both of them.

That is an interesting point. Thanks for sharing. that does make sence that the torque of the 700 in the sand would make the weight disadvantage less. See, I never ride in sand, so I dont know. I am coming from the dirt side of things. In the dirt, you dont have the resistance.

...by the way, sorry for writing a novel on your thread. You have to understand, I couldnt answer your question without stating where I am coming from, as some people dont want to hear numbers, specs, and plain math. I felt that they needed to hear where I was coming from, otherwise your thread really would ahve been hijacked, as it would have turned into nothing but, attacking, name calling, and hurt feelers
All of my opinions have been made from riding pretty much every single yamaha sport quad they have produced, minus the blaster. I few years back I had a modded 660, then went to the yfz. IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR form did the 660 come close to beating my yfz. Now we have a 700, which is stock for now......but I am assuming modded its not going to be THAT different. I expect a few more ponies maybe, but nothing mind boggling. So I am left with modded 660 knowledge, what I have read, and what numbers and math show. I believe I am in NO way bias either way. I, like every one else has the right to pick a favorite, and have an opinion at the end of the day, and its my opinion the yfz is a more performance minded quad, which appeal to more aggressive riders.
Maybe things are vastly different in the dunes or something, I dont know, as I only ride in the dirt anymore!
Talk to you later, and once again, sorry for the novel!

I cannot agree with you there, I also have had almost every sport quad made buy HONDA, YAMAHA, BOMDARDIER, and SUZUKI. I had a 04 660 raptor with a highcompresson 686 kit, cams exhaust and gearing, and i know that it would of beat my yzf450

The raptors, weather its a 660 or 700, hold there own just fine. They give me more trouble in a straight line than the yfz usually does. Thats just my experiance.

I would like to know what you have done to your TRX 450R, because i had a 2005 trx450r with the HRC kit, and a white brothers CARBON PRO exhaust and it was not as fast as my 686 04 686 Raptor OR my 05 yzf450 with just a PIPE and JEts

also "1bad450r" dont forget to carry a quart of oil in your back pocket because i know that the honda 450's and even worse the crf 250's burn alot of oil. I had to add .25 of a quart every two tanks of gas. The quad only holds .8 to 1 quart of oil in it anyway. Even worse the the CRF 450 owners manual says to rebuild the top end every 20 hours. I will never buy a honda again until they redesign there engines.

One other thing that I seem to have noticed. The new 700R comes with a much better exhaust right from the factory than the 660 did. I think it is even a little better than the YFZ's stock exhaust. This means that the 700R in stock form (especially with the spark arrestor removed) has another advantage but that tells me you won't see as much gain when you pipe it and intake it and of course install a power commander as we used to see after we put a nice full system on a 660. The 660 had record gains from pipe and intake because its oem setup was so unbelievably restrictive.

RobandDS what makes you come to that conclusion? How can what you are saying be true if a piped 700 can out run a piped 660? If the 660 is way more restricted than the 700 that would mean the 660 would be right with a piped 700... Just my 2 cents though.. Mace
