Is this normal?

Its not normal. Sounds like your piston rings are worn out. Mine did the same thing and I replaced the valve seals. That helped a little, but the smoking continued until I rebuilt the top end.

It wont hurt anything. The damage is already done. It may continue to get worse. A friend of mine rode his 400EX for a year with it smoking like a freight train. He never did fix. He just sold it like it was - still smoking and still running.
