Battle of the wolvies (old against new)
#32
Another possibly biased vote for the older 350 Wolverines.
I was excited when I heard the new Wolvys were going to be 450, and greatly let down when I heard they were autos. Then I saw them and said forget it. That is why I bought mine used and started building it back up (lack of maintenance).
If I want fast, I ride my 450, if I want a fun sport/ute to tear around the woods and have fun on, I pull the Wolverine out. Besides, the Wolverine was initially for my girlfriend to ride too, and she wouldn't ride an auto.
Todd, that is a great looking quad, bet you are enjoying that ride

hmm like i said i guess there is pro's and cons to each. i got mine cause it was my first ATV and i wanted something with 4x4 but i wasn't feeling the bigger grizz's. maybe i'll have to start looking around and just buy an older one so i can umm compare the two

HAHAHA All the power to you if you can, my girlfriend would kill me if I bought another. I already tried...
I don't mean to bash the new ones, don't get me wrong. Appearance is an opinion, and preferences are relative. While I like to shift for one reason, others don't like to shift for another. I have just always had a thing for the older ones since I rode a friends years ago, thats why I grabbed one.

I agree with the shifting part, I will start to shift if I'm on the woly sometimes if i have been riding something else, but i just wish the new woly had a rear rack.... I've been looking for a CMP, but can only find them for the old ones.... They both server there purpose though but stock for stock I'd still take the new wolys, if i was going to get a old one I'd just buy another big bear, and mod it and be done...

For me it wasn't about shifting. I had a dirt bike growing up so shifting gears wasn't a major concern. I bought it mainly because i knew who owned it before me and it happened to be a newer model. If he would of had a older model, I would of bought that one. I kept tossing the wolverine back and forth over a raptor. I wish I had the throttle response from the raptor on the wolverine then it would be a crazy sick quad. For now it has been a great riding machine and I don't regret buying it.

Well I'd like to offer an unbiased opinion as well as a criticism or two.....
First I'd like to say that besides the Polaris entry the Wolverine is really the only true Sport/Utility machine out there. Everything else is either pure sport or pure utility.
Now, with mods a person can begin to blurr the lines in either direction, but for what they are, OLD and NEW Wolvies, are a nice machine.
Nowthen, IMO I have to lean to the old Wolverine for the following reasons:
A. Manual Shift: For my own person riding I like a manual gearbox. The ultramatic is a fine CVT but it is a CVT. There are times that I like to just put at 10-20 mph on a flat road and I'd like to shift up and idle along rather than listen to the "POWERBAND" of the engine all the time. That way I can hear myself think.
B. Style, The new machine is nice looking, but I really HATE that pointy pushbar-ish thing.... The rest of the machine is nice however. The old machine though is a nice looking machine as well.
C. Utility, where is the rack on the new one? For the old one, my favorite look is rear rack, no front (see black OBS above)
D. 4wd, well in this area the new Wolverine has the old one beat without the help of Warn.... However, there were ( I don't know if they are still made or not) overfenders that could be installed to the old one (again see pics above) that helped with mud protection for those trailriders who would like to keep the mud under the quad and not in their face, up nose, in mouth, pants, gloves, shirt, socks, boots, in truck.... (See pics of Raptor 700 above for reference)
I have driven the new 350 2wd Wolvy as well as several trips on an OBS Wolvy.... I don't know about the new 450 4x4 in terms or power/performance accelleration stock to stock, but I will say that in reference to the Big Bear comment.... Have you even driven a Big Bear? The OBS and new IRS 400 4x4 Bear is geared like a tractor and is even slower.. For the majority of the trails I ride and my riding style, I really like them. However, any Wolverine, old and new would KILL said Bear in accelleration/ top speed anywhere.

I was comparing it to my old 99 big bear, which will out run a stock woly, and its stock, and has about 10,000 miles on it, the new ones are diffrent I agree, I was comparing old for old...
