Default 2001 Yamaha Blaster Engine Rebuild

Hello everyone,

The engine on my Yamaha Blaster went south today. The engine was never apart in the 11 years it was in my family.

I've heard of a 240 kit you could buy. Can someone educate me in regards to this kit? Is it worth buying this kit?

Thanks.

It turns out the cylinder was never bored before so I decided to have the cylinder bored .025, now I'm waiting on the new Wiesco piston kit.

The question that I have is, should I coat the cylinder in oil before putting the piston kit together? Also, what type of oil is good to use after a rebuild?

Thank you

I would not coat the cylinder in oil, it will smoke like a freight train when you fire it up and may foul your plug and run like crap until the oil burns off. The oil mixed in the fuel is supposed to lube the cylinder and crank bearing.

I've heard different, although I haven't put my engine back together as of yet. I was told to lightly use some of the "same as crankcase" oil on the cylinder walls and rings. It should burn off very quickly and I doubt it will foul a plug that quickly. After break-in of the engine, pull plug and clean the plug if you need to.

Yeah but you have a 4 stroke and the Blaster is a 2 stroke, whole different ball game. Why would you need extra lube during the 1st startup and not any other time? The piston will draw in mixed fuel/oil on it's 1st downstroke and will have the proper amount of oil already in it if mixed correctly. It will not hurt anything to lightly coat the cylinder with some 2 cycle oil (or crankcase oil for 4 strokes) or some kind of special cylinder coating, but in my experiences oil on the cylinder just gives dirt and lint somewhere to stick to and is not necesary.

It's all good, eventhough I never stated what ATV I was talking about. I have a 1979 Honda Odyssey which is a 250cc 2-Smoke that I was referencing. I still have it all apart, the Jug was bored 20 over and a brand new Wiseco matching Piston and Rings to go in it. I just haven't gotten the motivation to rebuild the engine (bearings, etc).

Thanks guys!

I forgot to add that I installed the oil pump block off modification. With that being said, what brand oil should I use to mix with the gas, and at what ratio do you recommend?

Thanks again!

Here's another forum stating to put a light coat of oil on re-assembly on 2-Strokes. Plenty of users saying the same thing. For me, a possible fouled plug is nothing to replace compared to something possibly seizing up in the engine upon initial rotations. Just my opinion and lots of others.

i always coat everything with a *light* coating of fresh oil. especially the wrist pin bearing i put a little heavier. never had any issues of smoke or anything, not saying that's what is supposed to be done, but thats what i've always done and it makes me feel better lol

Yeah I assumed you were talking about your Badger, lol. If you get the cylinder bored, the machine shop usually (the one I use anyway) will coat the cylinder with some type of oil, and they always have told me to wipe the excess oil out with a lint-free cloth, this gives the cylinder the "light" lube it needs without having to put anymore on it. I should have stated that earlier.
