I am helping a friend work on a 2002 Kodiak 400 with a neutral light problem. The light works but won't come on consistently. If we work the shift lever slowly we can see the light blink on and off. Sometimes with the engine off but with the key on, the light will stay on with the quad in neutral but then it goes out when we start the engine. I have a service manual on CD but it just shows the switch in the area of the seat/tank juncture and how to check switch for continuity.

Is this likely a problem with the switch itself or maybe an adjustment on the shifter linkage rod? Any pointers or things to check would be greatly appreciated.
