Default Gear oil leak 2000 Yamaha Kodiak 400

In the rear gear drive, there is a breather on top. I am leaking fluid out of it. There is no tube on the breather, looks like it broke off at some point. I drained and changed the fluid to see if any water had gotten in there, it had not. The fluid was clean. Any ideas what would cause this or where the breather tube should run.

Put a hose on it and run it up high like under the seat. There is also an accordion style that works well.

Thank you for the reply, I understand that this will give it a longer path to travel and should flow back into the gear box, but what causes this issue I have not had an issue with it until recently, is this normal?

I'd do as mentioned, running a hose up and making a loop facing downward. This can help keep moisture out and allow the foaming to go back down. This is what the so called experts say on gear foaming that I've read:

Causes
The causes of foaming are many. The most common include:

Water contamination

Solids contamination

Depleted defoamant (possibly due to the use of excessively fine filtration and electrostatic separation technologies)

Mechanical issues (causing excessive aeration of the fluid)

Overfilling of the sump with splash- and bath-lubricated compartments

Cross contamination of the fluid with the wrong lubricant

Contamination of the fluid with grease

Too much defoamant additive, either by incorrect formulation or by incorrect reconstruction (sweetening) of the additive package
