Default Maintenance

I have a 2001 Yamaha bear tracker I've been thinking about draining and putting in new diff fluid but I have a few questions I looked at the Manuel for my ATV and there's no info on what kind of diff fluid I should put in. So is there a certain kind or what ??. I was told diff fluid should be drained and refilled about once upon owning an ATV so should I even drain it in the first place ??. What would happen if the diff fluid gets too low ??. Sorry if I sound like an idiot but I'm new to this.

My wife owned a BearTracker for many years, great little machine. By all means do drain and fill the diff just to be sure there is no water or other contaminates in there. there is a drain plug near the bottom of the diff, you just have to look for it, looks like a regular bolt, the fill cap is much larger. I always use 75-90 synthetic diff lube and never had an issue. A few dollars more but greater protection, have used this stuff for many years and still do. I change mine every year, mabey two years if it doesn't go thru any water.

I looked for the drain plug and I unscrewed every bolt on the diff and none of them are drain plugs do you think there's a chance my quad doesn't have a drain plug ??

17mm drain cap under gear shift lever. Cap,spring and oil strainer. Chapter 8 page 6. Pdf opened up under Adobe Reader for me.https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...AFThmplpmCcyA3 IF the manual is the right one there should be an allen head drain plug under the rear diff shield/guard you have to pull off.

Opt is correct i do remember removing rhe shield to get to the drain plug. I remember mine being a hex head bolt but that could be a replacement or model year change.

Those free manuals come in handy, saves time crawling all over the machine looking for fill, drain plugs, plus have all the fluid requirements/quantity needed and other helpful maintenance steps.

I did have the factory service manual for mine but it went with the machine when I sold it. Have always had service manuals for all my toys and still do as they can become priceless!!
