Hey all,

I got a 99 Kodiak 400 that has no lights or power to winch when its running. The battery is dead, bike has been started maybe once or twice in over a year. ( been sitting in the garage at the ex wife's ) I know they all work because when I boost the bike to get her going everything works while the charger is on. As soon as you disconnect the charger the lights go out and no power to the winch. Is it as simple as a battery replacement? I thought that while it was started and running that it would make its own power to run this stuff?

Could be, and you need a new one anyway, so fit one and find out. I too would have thought the alternator would have produced enough for lights, though possibly not the winch, but it may be an internal short in the battery is taking everything. Once you have a new battery on, check how many volts are across the battery with the engine running. Should be between 13v and 14.5v and alter a bit with revs. If it is a steady 12 point something, you probably have a faulty voltage regulator or stator.
