the reverse switch plugs into the actuator for your reverse gear. The relay simply has the two wires going into it that kill the starter when it is engaged into reverse. A blue with a white stripe and a red with a white stripe. the relay also has a wire that ground the starter when in reverse thus killing the connection. The last wire is used to actuate the red light up on the handlebars. I took the red and blue wire and cut them behind the relay then wired them together. Thats it. I dont use those silly lights so i just did away with the whole relay. I got a billet clamp that looks alot better and is alot more simple than those lights.

I am assuming that when the quad cuts out it is because the relay is shorting the starter to ground. so if this is the problem and I want to keep the indicator lights on the dash what do i need to do?

One more thing; I have noticed that sometimes when my quad is in neutral it will not let me start it unless the clutch lever is pulled in. also sometimes when it is in gear it WILL let me start it without pulling the clutch lever in. Is this related to the reverse switch? also sometimes my battery connection comes loose.

thanks again

If you want to keep those lights you need to leave the wires intact that actuate the lights. That is going to make things more complicated so just remember every wire you cut has a positive or negative aspect. Mostly negative until you do something with that wire. Unless you have a wiring diagram and know what you are doing i wouldnt even try it.
