Default question about works triple rate shocks?

my wifes 440 ex my raptor and my friends 400ex all have works triple rate shocks and are very happy with the way they perform but can any one tell me what the aluminum rings that are loose on the main shock body under the springs are for.i cant figure out why these aluminum rings would be loose on the shock as they dont look like they perform any function but they are the same on all three pairs of shocks.this may not cause any problem but seems strange that you can hear these loose rings rattling around when you ride.any opinions on this would be appreciated.

They control the transition between the springs and you can add or remove them to tune the shock. I was going to say put a pipe on it so you won't hear them rattle but I see in your signature that you have one. Maybe shockwears?
