I had a bolt come out on my Kodiak shifter once that caused me some problems that sound similar. I had to removed the rubber boot and several bolts to get it apart enough to retrieve the bolt that came out. Luckily, I didn't loose it.
The other thing that makes it hard to change gears is if your idle is set too fast.

ya i got a 2003 big bear and have that same exact problem, no one but me can do it with my foot you just gotta give it a good shake while trying to push up on the shifter at the same time and it usally works...wierd? lol the bear is a hard shifter thought but im used to it my last machine was a 84 honda 200s atc which had a horrible tranny and shifted SO BAD so the bear is like god to me

I've had the same troubles. I've had some success holding in the left hand brake lever, and sort of rocking. No-one else could shift mine out but me, as well. I guess I just give it a lil more *** since its mine and all. There is a increase/decrease screw on the side of the tranny, but I'am not so sure it is designed to aliviate the problem. I haven't read the manual on that topic yet.
