Default Oops...added oil on left side of engine :(

Hi,
I just purchased a new 125cc chinese atv, honda clone engine, and had asked my dad to change out the oil for me with a better blend. He added it to the left side and said it all came out. After reading a few things online I found that the oil should have been put in on the right side. Now that the mistake has been made, should we take any measures to clean it out before we start it for the first time? This is my sons Christmas and I want to make sure it's good to go when Santa arrives! Thanks for any help you can provide.

Travis

Welcome to the forums.

Not familiar with that particular model. Is it an automatic? I would guess he added it to the transmission. If so, you should be able to just drain it and refill with the proper oil.

Its a 3 speed semi auto Tao Tao Honda clone engine. I read that the hole he put the oil in is an acess to view the timing marks on the flywheel? I haven't looked at it since he added the oil so im not totally sure. He did say all the oil poured right out as he added it though. I just need to know if it should be cleaned out or anything before we attempt to start it. Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forum travis1!

You might want to go buy some contact cleaner and take off the cover.. spray things down a bit.. it will more than likely run but the oil will attract dirt and cause problems later on.. you could also use rubbing alcohol. carb cleaner wouldnt be a good choice..

Would brake cleaner work? You know me, I'm looking for the easy way out.

I'm also wondering about using a can of engine degreaser. Its the stuff that you spray on an oily engine, let it sit a while to make the oil contamination water soluble, then hose it off.

I dont know.. When I was younger I would have used carb cleaner.. of course that would have been on a Honda, not a Chinese copy.. I dont want to be the one who suggested something that melted the insulation of the Chinese wires..

Carb cleaner will defintely soften/degrade any plastic that may be in there. Brake cleaner may as well, depending on the plastic type. If you're going to use it, test it on something else first. No flash contact cleaner, like CRC No Flash should work, but test it somewhere else first! If it smells like dry cleaning solvent, DON"T USE IT (some contact cleaners are mostly dry cleaner solvent and will eat up plastic, found this out the hard way on an antique Garcia fishing reel several years ago).

Thanks for the welcome guys.

We removed the cover, took a little time and cleaned out the oil, and now all is as good as new!

Thanks again!!!
