Sun l atv 109 cdi wiring per pin --- help !!!
#1
Hello All !!!
I recently purchased a " SUN L ATV 109 ". The previous owner said the bike ran about 2 months ago but his kids parked it and it wouldn't start anymore. Long story short ... " HE LIED TO ME " !
I found that the WIRES going to the CDI had been cut and the bike did not fire.
I am hoping for some help here. I am NO GOOD at ELECTRICS but I am hoping someone else here on this forum has a " SUN L ATV 109 " that can give me the WIRING COLORS PER CDI PIN. It has a 5 PIN CDI ... 2 PINS ON TOP ... 3 PINS ON THE BOTTOM . I need to know ( from the wiring harness ) the pin each color goes to. The colors from my harness are BLUE & WHITE, SOLID GREEN, YELLOW & BLUE, SOLID BLUE, and RED & BLACK . I know someone out there has one of these ( hopefully ) and can tell me the colors pin by pin. I got it to fire for about 3 seconds but it was a WIDE FLAT YELLOW SPARK ... and it was very intermitent like it was not timed. So I gave up and cam to YOU ALL ... Thank You In Advance ... Stephen
P.S ... Maybe LynnEdward has an IDEA > ?
I repeat ... I STINK at ELECTRICS !!! too many possibilities for me ...

Is this your CDI?

Some of your colors are fairly standard so let's start with those:
Green: Ground
Blue/White: Timing Trigger
Red/Black: AC Ignition Power
The non-standard colors:
Blue/Yellow: I'm guessing this is the ignition coil output
Blue: I'm guessing this is the Kill switch.
Do you have a meter? We could do some ohms and voltage verifying with a meter to give a greater confidence factor....
Another to way to get a better confidence factor: Look at the ignition coil and note what color wires in the wiring harness connect up to it. Do you see a Blue/Yellow wire? If so then the Blue/Yellow wire wire at the CDI is certainly the ignition coil output wire.
Look at the wires coming out of the stator area on the engine. Is there a black/red wire and a blue/white wire in the wiring harness at this location? If so that nails the timing trigger and the ignition power wires.
Are your other ground wires connecting to engine/frame ground via lugs and bolts also green? If so that nails down the color for ground...
But I also have to add: People who have good running quads don't cut the wires to the CDI. The only reason I can see that they would do that is if they are having serious problems, are at their wits end, and start doing stupid things. I really suspect that after we get the CDI wiring figured out that that will just be the first step on a somewhat longer course.
Do you have access to a meter? I'm thinking you might need one before this problem is solved...

I will try the wiring options today. I figure that you are right that the wires were cut for some other reason. I honestly expect the CDI to be BAD. They are only $5.00 on EBAY with free shipping so this should attest to the QUALITY of them as a whole. The WIRING HARNESSES are $34.99 and I understand are fairly GENERIC in that just about all the 50cc to 110cc and some 125cc CHINESE bikes are the same > ?
I have had several of the little CHINESE BIKES and I have never had a problem out of them EXCEPT LOOSE BOLTS and NUTS. I GOT BURNED this time ... BUT >>> WHEN YOU BUY A PIG IN A POKE ... SOMETIMES YOU GET THE PIG ... SOMETIMES ... YOU GET POKED !!! YOU GUSSED IT >>> I GOT POKED !!!
LYNN ... I THANK YOU FOR CHIMING IN ... if noting else I have 2 ODD BALL WIRES ... I can swap em around ... BUT ...as You said... I suspect a bad CDI or COIL ... The COIL has a BLACK SPOT on it where the BRADS are on the right end. LOOKS LIKE IT GOT HOT OR SPARKED AT ONE TIME.
Thank You ... STEPHEN

All the five pin CDI's as shown in the previous picture are the same.
I would not call the wiring harnesses for chinese quads "generic". Each one of those connectors in the harness has to mate up, and the choices for each of the parts on the quad are diverse.
For example, the harness has to hook up to the left handle bar assembly which does the start button, kill switch, light switch, and perhaps other functions. Go look on eBay and you will see there are *many* different *generic* left handlebar switch assemblies with different numbers of wires, and different connectors. Every other part on your quad is the same story...
*Every connector* on *every item* on your quad will have to match the new harness, which has a zero chance of happening unless you get the wiring harness for your exact model and year. Even then the odds of having issues that need resolving are still high.
But when you need to just change a part (like the left handlebar switch) you only have to deal with *one* connector, and you look through the many parts vendors to find the switch that looks the same, and has the same connector. That's a lot easier to do.
Changing the harness is a *last resort*, only if the harness is so hacked up it just cannot be saved. Almost always it is easier to fix the old harness then deal with the incompatibilities of any new harness.
