if you ride as aggressive as i do boots are a must other wise your going to end up snapping your ankle..they dont have to be riding boots just as long as they support your ankles good enough

Boots are a must. Not only will they protect you in many cases (go for some motorcross boots, you can get some for right around $125-$325), they will allow you to ride better and faster. You will have a much more stable platform to stand on, land on, and lean on. You might have to raise your shifter up one notch to get under it.
My boots were just about the best $200 I have spent.
They are one of two things I will not ride without( a hemet is the other).

I agree with sandneck , get a pair of O'Neils MX boots for 89 bucks , but if you want to go for the gold get a pair of SIDI's

Jollyrj, what part of Oregon you in?? I've got a club (about 30 members give or take a few that never ride). See the link in my signature. If you have questions about riding areas...feel free to ask.

Oh...and I always wear boots....they will save your ankles on more than one occasion.

I have SIDI boots and love them, I have a pair of their cycling shoes and that's where I first discovered how awesome their products are (all components are replaceable and lifetime guarantee). On a recent dune trip I took a drop off unintentionally and had it not been for my boots, I KNOW I would have sustained a compound ankle fracture and still be in a cast today(I took the shifter in my left ankle).
My rationale for boots is this: $250 now for a little protection vs. missing a week or more at work at $xxx.xx/per day...let alone a minimum of say $600 to see a doctor.
Easy math in my book, take care.
