700 Sportsman Timing
#1
Hey All,
I finally had a chance to let the 700(04 carb) stretch it's legs out the other day on an old service road. Completely buried the spedo @ 70 and had a good 1/4 throttle left, then the RPM's hit 6200-6300 (hard to look down going so fast), and it hit the top of the rev limiter. I looked in the manual to see what the timing is set at and it has 8 BDTC @ 2000 RPM. What on God's green earth does this mean? Is there a way to advance it? Will a new CDI box from the Frontier sled work? This machine has a lot more left in it if I can get it out. Any help would be appreciated.

It goes from 8 deg at 2000 linear up to about 30 deg at 6500. An offset timing key will give you a bit more ign timing, but dont forget, the rev limiter is still there, and the belt is to the top of its travel on that model in about 750 ft.Once you are out of gear, you are out of gear.

Thanks for the replay Helix,
So, based on your response there is a lot more involved with getting more top speed other than adjusting the timing. I can understand being out of gear, but even when the belt is on the top, if the engine revs up another 1000 RPM would that get you more speed? I thought it would be an easy plug in CDI change. Not a big concern anyway, since I mostly drive trails 30-40mph tops. I owned the bike for about 10 months now and it's this first time I had it wide open for so long (about 3 miles).
