Hey guys, I haven't been around here in a long long time, been too busy fixin sleds!

A guy I know brought his 02 Sportsman 500 over, said he just wanted me to change the oil and grease it up. I parked it in the shed and the next day there was a puddle of gas under it. I noticed the gas dripping from the bottom of the carb. It is leaking from that little nipple that sticks down below that screw. (sorry, don't know proper terms) there is no hose on that nipple like there usually is. I went through the carb and cleaned it real good and put it back on and gas is still leaking from that nipple. Is it just because that hose isn't on there or is something wrong?
The airbox was half full of a gasy/oily mixture when I pulled it off. Very very dirty.
When I pulled the drain plug on the resevoir to drain the oil, to my supprise the oil shot out with ALOT of pressure, well past my drain pan all over the floor! It was like water, and it just kept shooting out of there lol! It appears that alot of gas must have mixed with the oil, but Why????

 

Replace the float needle and seat.

 

cornbread2 is probably right. It could also be the float level. The problem is that the float bowl is over filling and some of the gas drains into the intake, past the valves and drains past the rings into the crankcase. That's why you are getting gas in the oil.

Also tell him to shut off the gas at the petcock when not in use. Cornbread is right on but even with a healthy carb a piece of grit can get in and stick the float which allows gas to dilute the engine oil.

 

THanks guys, I will replace the Float needle & seat and see how that works. It only has 1200 miles so I'm suprised that that would be an issue allready, but I just cleaned the carb and there is no dirt in there, so it must just be worn out.

I agree with the last 2 listers, the leaking gas is due to the float bowl being too full and overflowing. As mentioned earlier it could be the float bow level needs to be adjusted but my money is on the needle valve. After a while a small ridge wears into the rubber seal on the end of the needle valve and that's enough to cause it to leak.
As for the oil squirting out when you drained it, it sounds like it is under pressure which is not supposed happen. If this is the case it would be worth your while to make sure the engine vent is clear.
