Are there any differences between the models? If so, what are they and how can you tell one from another?

What are some things to look after and/or do as preventative maintenance on these models? We used to have a 1997 model at the ranch that lasted forever but I know these are not the same so any help would be useful!

One way to tell is from the head lights. The 05 uses a kind of triangular shaped head light and 04 are more rectangular. The front rack on a 05 has an integrated storage compartment under the top that hinges up. Those are a couple of the easy ones.

 

What are the differences between a 2004 and a 2004.5? What serial number marks the change over?

there is a huge diff between the 04 and 05 heck there was even an 04.5 model that was between the 2 it would take ALOT of typing to tell you every diff they dont look the same they use diff 4wd systems the 05 seem overall bigger but im not sure they have diff frames...

i just re read your post and the diff ith the awd system is it use to engage in the front hubs so there was a large black cap that screwed into the hub the 04.5 and up engage in a center hilliard and the front wheels have the same cover as the rear

 

Where can I find a photo of an 04 and an 04.5? All I can find is that there is a difference but no one seems to be able to tell me what the difference actually is! Is the shifting pattern different? My quad has P<R<H<L<N in a straight pattern. The only owners manual online does not show it to be this way!
