Default proper way to shift a manual tranny?

Gang,

I am wondering the proper way to down shift a AC manual tranny?
I am also wondering the speeds you guys use to determin when to either up shift or down shift.
I currently use the sound of the engine to determine my shifts but seem to shift early or late.
I have noticed that when I down shift the tires seems to briefly lock up...a tell tale sign I am doing it wrong.
My Cat has 30 miles on it and I want to break it in correctly versus just breaking it! I have an 05 400 4x4 man. Any help would be appreciated.

Slow down before you shift down.

When down shifting, while you have the toe lever held down, rev the engine to about the rpms the lower gear will need or just like any stick shift, you will chirp the tires.

slowing down is not enough..let's say I am doing 45 in 5th.....I could go down to 25 and still need to drop 2 gears before the engine is in the proper range.

Nats, I also have a 2005 400i manual (my ride) and a 2001 250 2X4 (now the wifes ride and she loves it after I did a few mods). First time I've seen someone with the same two quads. I have over a 1000 miles on mine since just before Thanksgiving of last year.

I have an 05 500 manual shift and love it.
I have been riding dirtbikes for 30 years.
They all had manual clutches, but I hardly ever used the clutch for upshifts or downshifts, just for stopping
You just blip the throttle(off and back on right away) and the shift will be smooth as an automatic.
Same thing works great on my Cat.

bear,

I sold the 2001 quad recently. My wife and I split and I was able to keep only a select bunch of toys. I really enjoyed the 01 as it was my first quad after I rode dirt bikes for many years. I like the Cat better then the Yamaha, Suz, Polaris and Honda that I rode. I just did not find anything that had all the goodies the Cat offers stock.
