I purchased an '06 400 4X4 from an individual with 1250 miles on it. Now that I'm learning more about ATV's, I am wondering how do I determine if my belt is slipping, or going bad. Is there a way to check, and also, is there a way to adjust it?
I've read some pretty interesting posts on this site prior to joining; hopefully, I can learn from your experience.

You're belt is slipping when you give it gas, and your ATV revs up and you don't move for a while. There are different adjustments you can do to it to raise the engagement point. With only 1250 miles though your belt should be just like new. I would take a look at it by taking off the "belt exhaust". It is the 3" ovel hose thing on the top of the belt. Then look in with a flashlight and take a look at it.

What is your ATV doing to make you think it is slipping? Does it matter if you are in high/low?

Hey Catterman. Thanks for the quick reply. I noticed it this morning when I was riding through a pasture. From a dead-stop, it seems to take a little while until it feels like it has full power, then it quickly smooths out. This happened when I was in High range. Didn't know, but thought I would check.
When I look at the belt exhaust, what should I be looking for??

 

The 400 is a good solid motor, but not a speed demon. Is this your first CVT four wheeler? Could be that you just need to get used to an auto. But if there is nothing wrong with your belt, and you just want more power from the clutch, it is fairly easy to do a clutch kit. When you look at your belt, just look for any crap or dirt in there, and make sure you belt looks good, with no missing lugs or cracks. YOu should be able to tell if something is wrong in there. Good luck, and take a picture if you think you find something and we can check it out.
