Default Should my LHNR shifter lever have detents - '00 500 Auto

Just trying to get my (new to me) '00 500 Auto on the move after fixing the motor. I've never driven it. The shifter seems a bit sloppy, and doesn't stay in the Neutral area very well. It seems to just rely on the trans shifter shaft position to hold itself in place. Are there supposed to be detents/notches for the shifter arm to fall into for each gear? And I can adjust the cable to match those positions with the shifter shaft on the motor.... My shifter can just be moved forward/reverse without any need to push it to the side or anything. It looks worn out too where the shifter arm passes through the slot/gate. Maybe it's just time for a new shifter.

I don't have any neighbors with AC quads or I might go check theirs....
Any ideas?

Thanks,

I just looked online at Babbitsonline. Looks like the shift lever and shift plate are about $20. I'll just go that route and replace them.
