Default 2005 part identification

I have a 2005 400 LE and i'm having trouble indentifying a part. I have a full manual and checked all the parts diagrams on the web. It is an accordion shaped rubber boot that comes off of a line from the front and rear drive assemblies. The boot has a small leak. If anybody could tell me what this part is and what purpose it serves? thanks

The part is called a gear case bladder. As the differential heats up from use the fluid and air inside expand. This causes the accordian bladder to expand and not blow fluid out the seals.

I do not know how much the fluid truely expands or if it is just the air inthe gearcase that expands. But the part # is 0402-142 and cost about $2.50. I had to replace one a while back that some brush tore off.

Some older ATV's just had a tube that ran up to a a high spot on the frame above the carborator. They allowed the gearcase to "breathe". I think this is just a different design for the same thing.

Hope this helps.
